Journal entry:
Day 24: Home, at last!
We reflectson hope and resilience during son's chemotherapy journey as we finally return home!
Today was a milestone for us. The sky was clear, and the sun beamed with an intensity that matched our cautious optimism. Waking up in the hotel room for what we hoped was the last time in a while, the beautiful sunshine and blue skies outside felt like nature's nodding in approval.
The task of packing up and leaving felt bittersweet. The hotel, with its impersonal but comforting predictability, had become a temporary haven—a $1500 sanctuary that, despite its price, offered us a semblance of normalcy far removed from the unpredictability of the Ronald McDonald House. Dad meticulously disassembled his makeshift workstation, symbolizing our transient life these past weeks. The checkout was our silent farewell to this chapter just before noon.
Brunch at Shari's felt like a luxury, a small reclaiming of everyday family moments. Owen's sudden interest in coloring was a beacon of hope, a reminder of the simplicity we longed for. Yet, the shadow of fatigue soon fell over him, an ever-present reminder of the battle he endures daily. Administering Oxi before his chemotherapy appointment seemed necessary, a small mercy to ease his way through the day's medical necessities.
The chemotherapy appointment unfolded with a routine now familiar yet no less daunting. Each nurse's kindness was a balm, and their welcoming nature made the hospital feel less like a battleground. Owen's resilience through his PICC dressing change was a testament to his growing strength and his ability to face each challenge with a bravery that humbled us.
Discussing the next phase of treatment, "Consolidation," with his doctors offered us a map through the uncertainty. Learning about the shift from Dexamethasone to a milder steroid provided a glimmer of relief, a promise of fewer side effects, and hope for regaining some semblance of Owen's pre-treatment self. The news of Owen's lab results and his body's incredible fight filled us with gratitude. His resilience, mirrored by his improving white cell and platelet counts, was a beacon of progress.
The journey home was an odyssey in itself. Portland's traffic ensnared us, causing a frustrating delay in our much-anticipated return. Owen's discomfort and whining were challenges we faced with empathy and creativity, stopping at a rest stop to adjust and comfort him as best we could. The relief of finally arriving home was palpable, a mix of joy and overwhelm at the state of our living space. Yet, Nick's kindness in caring for our home and pets was a blessing we couldn't have been more thankful for.
Owen's joy at being home, his heartfelt "Hi kitties! I missed you!" was a moment of pure delight. Yet, this joy was tempered by the reality of his limitations and his sadness at being unable to play as he wished. It was a stark reminder of the journey ahead, of the moments of joy intertwined with challenges.
In a heartwarming surprise, Melissa's aunt greeted us with a warmth that transcended the chaos of our return. Unprompted, she had brought not one, not two, but three giant Abby's pizzas, Owen's favorite root beer, and a selection of light groceries (including cookies!). It was her thoughtful gesture that infused our homecoming with comfort and care — a tangible reminder of the support network surrounding us. The big hugs and heartfelt thank you’s we exchanged were mere tokens of our immense gratitude. In that moment, amidst the trials and tribulations, we felt profoundly blessed.
Today, we faced each obstacle with a mix of resilience and grace. We met the logistical hurdles, Owen's discomfort, and the emotional toll of his momentary despair with solutions borne of necessity and love. We learned the importance of celebrating the small victories, the incremental progress, and the power of hope.
We're thankful for the safety of home, the support of friends and family, and the medical advancements that offer Owen a fighting chance. As we lay in our own bed tonight, we're reminded of the journey's weight and the strength it demands from us all.
Tomorrow offers a new day, a chance to rest and slowly find our rhythm at home. We're mindful of not rushing, of allowing ourselves the space to adjust and recover. Our focus is on healing, supporting Owen through every step, and finding joy in the ordinary moments that knit our lives together.
Every day in this journey with Owen is a lesson in courage, love, and resilience. Our story is one of many challenges, immense love, and unyielding hope. As we close today's chapter, we look forward to the promise of tomorrow, the moments of joy and challenge, and the journey ahead as a family.
