Day 5: Journaling the Journey
Family navigates Owen's care, finding strength in support, switching care roles, and community solidarity.
As we carefully navigate Owen’s needs, we find ourselves clinging to each other and to the semblance of routine we've managed to carve out. It's a dance of endurance and love, where Dad takes over the evening routine, allowing Mom to recharge with a night away in a hotel. The next day, we switch roles, each of us finding solace in brief moments of solitude, gathering strength for the days ahead.
The arrival of Melissa's mom, Myrna, has been a beacon of comfort in our storm. There's an irreplaceable warmth in the support a mother can provide to her daughter, offering emotional sustenance that complements the practicalities that occupy Dad's focus. Myrna's presence has been a gift, reminding us of the multifaceted nature of support and love.
Our hearts were lightened by the news that the Ronald McDonald Hotel would be our home away from home from March 2nd to the 11th, with hopes of extending our stay on a waiting list. This haven offers not just a place to rest, but a community of understanding, a shared space of hope and resilience.
Owen, our brave warrior, is showing signs of the battle he's enduring. The steroids, necessary as they are, have begun to wear on his spirits, leaving him both crabby and weary. His appetite, too, has become a battleground, with hunger pangs that refuse to be satisfied by even his once-favorite meals. We're learning patience in new measures, holding onto the hope that his appetite will return with vigor.
In this journey, we've been humbled and uplifted by the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and even acquaintances from our past. To know we're not alone, to feel the embrace of a community rallying behind Owen, has been a source of indescribable strength. Your kindness, your offers of help, and your shared stories of courage have woven a tapestry of support that envelops us in its warmth.
This overwhelming wave of solidarity has inspired us to create this journal website, a beacon for Owen's journey. It's not just a chronicle of the challenges and victories along the way; it's a nexus for kindness, a place where support can manifest in myriad ways. Whether through donations, fundraisers, or the simple yet profound act of sharing your story, this journal will be the place to go.

Help us provide Owen with the very best quality of life.
While insurance will cover some of our expenses, as we’ve learned with his Leukemia, it’s going to be a major financial burden to give Owen the best quality of life.
