Week 10: New Phase of Treatment!
Owen completes cancer treatment phase and enter a new one as we brace for next challenges on the horizon
It's been ten weeks since we began this arduous journey with Owen, ten weeks that somehow stretch and compress time into a tangle of emotions and days. Today marks a significant milestone; Owen has triumphantly completed his Consolidation treatment. The primary aim was to eradicate any lurking leukemia cells, potential precursors of a relapse. Witnessing his resilience and courage, albeit as a parent mixed with worry and pride leaves me profoundly moved.
We're now transitioning to a new phase—Interim Maintenance. This stage of treatment revolves around evolving doses of chemotherapy tailored to Owen's neutrophil counts and kidney response, incorporating drugs like methotrexate and Vincristine. It requires regular drives to Doernbecher's every Monday and Thursday. There's a looming caveat: if Owen's numbers falter below a certain threshold, it resets our schedule, adding unpredictability to our already tumultuous lives. Despite these challenges, this phase is designed to maintain remission while allowing his bone marrow a respite to heal from the onslaught of previous therapies—a silver lining.
As we look forward, the respite feels short-lived. We brace for the Delayed Intensification phase in eight weeks, a rigorous regimen meant to obliterate any residual, drug-resistant leukemia cells. This upcoming challenge rekindles our anxieties during the initial induction period, though now tinged with the wisdom of experience.
Our family faces another daunting dilemma amid these clinical oscillations between hope and trepidation. Melissa's FMLA leave is drawing to a close. With it, the need to return to work arises just a month before the intensification phase. The practicalities of income, job security, and Owen's need for care converge at a crossroads that might compel Melissa to leave her job. If so, Devin's responsibility to amplify his business endeavors intensifies—a balancing act of financial necessity and parental presence.
Despite the whirlwind of medical appointments and critical decisions, Owen remains blissfully unaware, enveloped in the joys of childhood. His recent outings—the beach trips, visits to his grandparents, and the transformation of our living room into his personal kingdom of toys—have been his refuge. They've helped him regain his physical health, evidenced by his nearly average weight, reduced puffiness, and his spirits.
His experiences at Doernbecher's, especially the warmth and expertise of the nursing staff, have been nothing short of a blessing. They extend a kind of maternal affection and patience that profoundly eases our hearts and reassures us that amidst the chaos, there is a haven of care and empathy.
As we navigate this complex journey, our focus also shifts towards celebrating life's sweeter moments—Owen's upcoming fourth birthday. Plans are underway for a backyard celebration, complete with a bouncy house and hotdogs on the grill, a testament to life's resilience and the joys that can flourish even in the most challenging times.
This intricate blend of medical battles, familial decisions, and simple joys forms the essence of our current life chapter. Each day, we learn, adapt, and above all, hold onto each other—a family united not just by blood but by an unyielding bond of love and courage. As we prepare for the road ahead, I find solace in knowing that whatever it brings, we face it together.
