Owen's birthday shines amidst treatment, as family and friends offer love and support during Interim Maintenance.

As of today, we're nearly three weeks into Owen's Interim Maintenance phase of treatment. This phase has introduced a regimen of evolving chemotherapy doses, tailored to Owen's neutrophil counts and kidney response, featuring drugs like methotrexate and vincristine. Our routine now includes regular drives to Doernbecher's every Monday and Thursday, where they progressively increase his dosage to target any remaining undetectable leukemia cells, until his numbers suggest a need to pause.

From the outset of this phase, Owen has shown remarkable resilience. After his first visit, he slipped back into the routines of a vibrant 4-year-old. He spent time with Melissa in the garden, and his grandparents gifted him a new bear nightlight and Bluetooth radio as an early birthday present.

His birthday itself on May 2nd was a highlight during this challenging time. The staff at Doernbecher's celebrated him with a Hot Wheels track, adding a sparkle to his special day. At home, Owen was showered with gifts and love, especially from his cousins and friend like Grace from daycare. Seeing him relish the joys of childhood at Papa’s Pizza was a heartwarming reminder of the community support surrounding us.

This was the big present from us. He's been wanting this thing ever since he saw it on the show.

However, this period has also been an emotional rollercoaster, particularly for Devin. He's grappling with a mix of anger and unanswered "why?" questions that seem to have no end. The well-intended comments from those outside our immediate circle can inadvertently strike a nerve, as many fail to grasp that Owen's remission doesn't mean the end of our journey. There's a long road ahead, and the nuances of this path are often misunderstood by those who haven't walked it.

Devin has been balancing the dual roles of financial provider through his business, A Video Maker LLC, and as a steadfast partner to Melissa in caring for Owen. This has required him to maintain patience with others' judgments and to focus on the emotional well-being of our entire family.

This journey is a stark reminder of how fortunate we are to have access to the medical advances of today. Fifty years ago, the story might have been tragically different. It's this perspective shift—understanding the fragility of life and the importance of empathy—that guides us through each day.

As we navigate this phase, our priority remains clear: to care for Owen and to support each other's mental health. It's a time for patience, understanding, and focusing on what truly matters—our son's health and our family's resilience.
